Valentinian III c.419-455
Roman emperor

Great-nephew of Valentinian II, and son of Constantius III, he was given the Western Empire by Theodosius II, Emperor of the East, in AD425. Initially, his mother Placidia was the dominant influence, and after 433 the Commander-in-Chief Aëtius. He lost control of Africa to the Vandal Gaiseric in 442. He stabbed Aetius to death (454), but the next year was himself slain by two of Aetius's bodyguards.
