Veit, Philipp 1793-1877
German painter

Born in Berlin, he was the son of Dorothea Schlegel (1763-1839) and grandson of Moses Mendelssohn. A Catholic convert, he settled in Rome in 1815 and became conspicuous among the young German painters who sought to infuse into modern art a medieval earnestness. He became director of the Art Institute at Frankfurt am Main in 1830.
