Waller, Fats (Thomas Wright) 1904-43
US jazz pianist, composer and entertainer

He was born in New York, the son of a Baptist preacher who encouraged him to play the organ for services as a child. A professional musician at 15, he gained experience as a theatre organist, movie-house pianist and in clubs. Influenced by 'stride' pianist James P Johnson, who coached him, Waller began his recording career in 1922 and the first records by 'Fats Waller and his Rhythm', featuring his novelty singing, were made in 1934. Waller wrote many jazz standards, such as 'Honeysuckle Rose' (c.1928), 'Ain't Misbehavin''(1929) and 'Keepin' Out of Mischief Now' (1932).
