Warwick, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland and Earl of 1502-53
English soldier and statesman

Son of Edmund Dudley, he was deputy governor of Calais, and served under Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, in his Scottish campaigns. Created Earl of Warwick in 1546, he was appointed joint regent for Edward VI and High Chamberlain of England in 1547. As virtual ruler of England he was created Duke of Northumberland in 1551 and brought about the downfall and eventual execution of Somerset (1550-52). He married his fourth son, Lord Guildford, to Lady Jane Grey, and proclaimed her Queen on the death of Edward VI in 1553, but was executed on the accession of Mary I.
