Wassermann, Jakob 1873-1934
German novelist

He was born in Fürth, Bavaria, and after working in a factory at the age of 17, did a year of military service, which he hated as he was a pacifist and a Jew. He later lived in Vienna and in Syria. His impressive novel Die Juden von Zirndorf (1897, Eng trans The Jews of Zirndorf, 1933) was followed by a succession of novels, culminating in the trilogy completed just before his death: Der Fall Maurizius (1928, Eng trans The Maurizius Case, 1930), Etzel Andergast (1931, Eng trans 1932) and Joseph Kerkhovens dritte Existenz (1934, Eng trans Joseph Kerkhoven's Third Existence, 1934). He also wrote short stories, biographical studies of Columbus and Henry Morton Stanley, and an autobiography (1921).
