Watts-Dunton, (Walter) Theodore 1832-1914
English poet and critic

Born in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, he practised law for a time, but in London he became the centre of a remarkable literary and artistic company, and a friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Philip Marston and afterwards Tennyson. He was a prolific early contributor to the Athenaeum literary review (1876-98) and others. The Coming of Love (1897) was a selection of his poems, and in 1898 appeared his novel of gypsy life, Aylwin. Old Familiar Faces (1915) contains recollections from the Athenaeum. At his home in Putney he looked after Swinburne for the last 30 years of the poet's life.
