Williamson, Malcolm Benjamin Graham Christoper 1931-
Australian composer
Born in Sydney, he studied under Eugčne Goossens and Elizabeth Lutyens, and went to England in 1953. He began his career as a soloist with orchestras in London, Vienna, Haifa, Sydney and Melbourne, and now lives in England, performing as a pianist and organist, lecturing and composing. His operas include Our Man in Havana (1963), The Violins of Saint-Jacques (1966) and The Red Sea (1972). He has written for television and films, including The Happy Prince (1965) and Julius Caesar Jones (1966), and composed ballets, orchestral works, vocal, choral and piano music, and 'cassations', often involving the audience. He was made Master of the Queen's Music in 1975, and was president of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1977-82).
