Wordsworth, Dorothy 1771-1855
English writer

Born in Cockermouth, Cumberland, the only sister of William Wordsworth, she was his constant companion, accompanying him on tours to Scotland, the Isle of Man and abroad. Her Journals show that her keen observation and sensibility provided a good deal of poetic imagery for both her brother and his friend Coleridge - more than that, they regarded her as the embodiment of that joy in Nature which it was their object to depict. In 1829 she suffered a breakdown from which she never fully recovered. Her Recollections of a Tour made in Scotland AD 1803 (1874) is a classic.
