Wundt, Wilhelm Max 1832-1920
German physiologist and psychologist, founder of experimental psychology

Born in Neckarau, Baden, he studied at the University of Heidelberg and under Johannes Müller. In 1858 he became Wilhelm von Helmholtz's assistant at Heidelberg, and in 1875 became Professor of Physiology at Leipzig. He made studies of the nervous system and the senses, the relations of physiology and psychology, logic and other subjects, seeking to understand the consciousness by means of its experiences. He published Vorlesungen über die Menschen und Thierseele (1863, 'Lectures on the Mind of Humans and Animals'), a book on ethics (1886), Grundriss der Psychologie (1896, 'Outlines of Psychology'), and Völkerpsychologie (10 vols, 1900-20, 'Ethnic Psychology').
