Wyatt, Sir Thomas 1503-42
English poet and courtier

Born in Allington, Kent, he studied at St John's College, Cambridge. He published nothing in his lifetime, but has served as an exemplar for English love poets. His best work is his lyrics and sonnets, and he was regarded as the most important of all the English poets who imitated - and then added to - Italian models. The best-known collection of his work was edited by Kenneth Muir (1949, rev edn 1963), who also wrote Wyatt's biography in Life and Letters (1963).
