York, Richard, 3rd Duke of 1411-60
English nobleman, and claimant to the English throne

The father of Edward IV, Richard III, and George, Duke of Clarence, he loyally served the weak-minded Henry VI in Ireland and France, and was appointed Protector during his illnesses (1454-56), but was always in conflict with the king's wife, Margaret of Anjou, and her Lancastrian forces. In 1460 he marched on Westminster and claimed the Crown, was promised the succession and appointed Protector again, but was killed in a rising by Lancastrian forces at Wakefield.
