Zeno c.440-491AD
Byzantine emperor

An Isaurian noble, he married (AD466) Ariadne, daughter of Leo I, and became sole ruler (474) on the death of their son, Leo II. He tried to achieve a reconciliation between the orthodox and monophysite churches of the east, but his doctrinal compromise, the Henotikon, merely antagonized both parties and caused a schism with the Roman Church.
