Ethelred or Ćthelred I d.871
Anglo-Saxon King of Wessex

One of the five sons of King Ethelwulf (Ćthelwulf) and elder brother of Alfred, the Great, he succeeded to the throne in 865. In that year a large Danish invasion army landed in East Anglia intent on permanent conquest, and captured York and Northumbria. Ethelred, with Alfred as his second-in-command, helped to defend Mercia against them. Early in 870 the Danes established a fortified camp at Reading in Wessex. Ethelred and Alfred defeated them at Ashdown in Berkshire but Ethelred died soon afterwards, to be succeeded by Alfred.
