Hawkes, Jacquetta, née Hopkins 1910-96
English archaeologist and writer

Born in Cambridge and educated at the Perse School and Newnham College, Cambridge, she was the first woman to study archaeology and anthropology to degree level. Her first excavation was directed by Christopher Hawkes, whom she married in 1933, and with whom she published Prehistoric Britain (1944). Her earlier publications include The Archaeology of Jersey (1939), Early Britain (1945) and A Land (1951). She also wrote on Egyptian topics, produced a biography of Sir Mortimer Wheeler, and wrote a book of poetry, Symbols and Speculations (1948). With her second husband, J B Priestley, she wrote Journey Down the Rainbow (1955), a jovial indictment of US life in letter form, as well as fictional works. Her later publications include The World of the Past (1963) and the Shell Guide to British Archaeology (1986). She also served on the Central Committee of UNESCO (1966-79), and was a co-founder of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in 1957.
