Daniel, also called Belteshazzar 6th century BC
Judean exile and prophet

Born of noble descent, he was taken from Jerusalem after the capture of King Jehoiakim of Judah to serve in the court of Nebuchadnezzar. He quickly gained a reputation for wisdom, for faithfulness to his god and for the interpreting of dreams. Later he himself had visions prophesying the coming of the Messiah's kingdom. In translating the writing on the walls of the banqueting chamber, 'Mene mene tekel u-pharsim', he predicted the downfall of King Belshazzar. Because of his wisdom he was appointed third in rank in the kingdom and went on to serve Darius I, King of the Medes, and Cyrus, King of the Persians.
