Rákóczi, Francis II 1676-1735
Hungarian nobleman and rebel leader

He was born into a princely family of Hungary and Transylvania, and in 1703 led a Hungarian revolt against Austrian rule. He was hailed as a national hero, but his forces met with severe defeats (1708, 1710), and in 1711 he went into exile rather than accept a peace settlement. His later years were spent as a Carmelite monk.
