Netanyahu, Binyamin 1949-
Israeli Likud politician
He was born in Israel and educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA. Between 1967 and 1972 he served as a soldier in the Israeli Defence Forces and in 1976 became a director of the Jonathan Institute, a foundation which studies counter-terrorism. In 1982 he was appointed Israel's ambassador to the United Nations and in 1988 was elected to the Knesset as a member of the right-wing Likud Party. Having served as deputy Foreign Minister (1988-91) and deputy Prime Minister (1991-92), he contested the 1996 general election and was elected Prime Minister. In contrast to his predecessor Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995, he has pursued a more cautious policy in implementing the 1993 peace accord with the Palestinian people.
