She was born in London, the second daughter of Major Ronald Ferguson of the Life Guards, and was brought up at Sunninghill in Berkshire. Her parents were divorced and her mother later married an Argentinian polo-player. After a brief career in publishing, Sarah married Prince Andrew, Duke of York, in 1986. They had two daughters, Beatrice (1988- ) and Eugenie (1990- ). They were separated in 1992 amid intense press publicity about the marriage, and were divorced in 1996. Since then she has written books for children and her autobiography, My Story (1996), and has gained celebrity status in the USA.
