Amherst, Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron 1717-97
English soldier

He was born in Riverhead, Kent, and joined the army at the age of 14. He played an important part in the North American phase of the Seven Years War (1756-63), and was in command of the expedition against the French in Canada and captured Louisburg (1758). Appointed Commander-in-Chief of North America in 1759, he captured Montreal in 1760. He was Governor-General of British North America from 1760 to 1763, and was Commander-in-Chief of the British army from 1772 to 1796. Amherst College was named after him.
