Anckarström, Johan Jakob 1762-92
Swedish army officer and assassin

He was a page in the court, served in the royal bodyguard, and after settling on his estates in 1783 was tried for high treason, but released for lack of evidence. Soon afterwards he conspired with a ring of disaffected nobles to murder King Gustav III of Sweden, and after drawing the short straw, wounded the king mortally with a pistol at a masked ball at the Royal Opera House. He was publicly flogged for three days, and then executed.
