Andrew, St 1st century AD
One of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ

He was a fisherman who had previously followed John the Baptist. According to tradition he preached the Gospel in Asia Minor and Scythia, and was crucified in Achaia (Greece) by order of the Roman governor. The belief that his cross was X-shaped dates only from the 14th century. He was the brother of Simon Peter (St Peter), and is the patron saint of Scotland and of Greece and Russia. His feast day is 30 November.
