The Campbells were a powerful West Highland clan, who had achieved knighthood in the 13th century and obtained the barony of Lochow in 1315. From 1445 the chief was styled Lord Campbell until the earldom of Argyll was conferred upon Colin, 2nd Lord Campbell in 1457.
