Arlington, Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of 1618-85
English statesman

He was born in Arlington, Middlesex. Following a period in Spain after the English Civil War, he returned to England with the Restoration and was created Lord Arlington in 1663 and Earl of Arlington in 1672. A member of the cabal ministry under Charles II, he was Secretary of State (1662-74), negotiated the Triple Alliance against France (1668), and helped to develop the English party system. In 1674 he was cleared of an embezzlement charge, but resigned and became Lord Chamberlain.
