Arundel, Thomas 1353-1414
English prelate and statesman
The third son of Richard Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel, he was Chancellor of England five times (1386-89, 1391-96, 1399, 1407-10, 1412-13). He became archdeacon of Taunton and Bishop of Ely (1374), then Archbishop of York (1388), and finally of Canterbury (1396). He supported the nobles opposed to Richard II, who banished him (1397), but he returned to help seat Henry of Lancaster (Henry IV) on the throne (1399). He was a vigorous opponent of the Lollards.
