Aspasia 5th century BC
Greek adventuress

She was born in Miletus, Anatolia. Intellectual and vivacious, she was lampooned in Greek comedy and satire, but was held in high regard by Socrates and his followers. She was a great inspiration to Pericles, who successfully defended her against a charge of impiety, and became his mistress after his separation from his Athenian wife.
