Aylmer, John 1521-94
English prelate

Born probably at Aylmer Hall, Norfolk, he graduated from Cambridge in 1541, and became tutor to Lady Jane Grey. In 1553 he was installed as archdeacon of Stow, but fled to the Continent to escape persecution during the reign of Mary I. He returned to become archdeacon of Lincoln (1562), and in 1577 was consecrated Bishop of London. Equally disciplinarian to both Catholics and Puritans, he was pilloried as 'Morrell', the 'proude and ambitious pastoure', in Edmund Spenser's Shephard's Calendar (1579).
