Aëtius, Flavius c.390-454AD
Roman general

He was born in Moesia. In 433AD he became patrician, consul, and general-in-chief, and as such maintained the empire for 20 years. His main achievements were the destruction of the Burgundian Kingdom in eastern Gaul, and the defeat of Attila the Hun in 451. Three years later the jealous Emperor Valentinian III stabbed him to death.
