Bacon, Sir Nicholas 1509-79
English statesman

He attained high legal office which, as a Protestant, he lost under Mary I, Tudor. However, on the accession of Elizabeth I (1558) he was made Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, and with William Cecil was left to manage Church affairs. A staunch anti-Catholic, he was an implacable enemy of Mary, Queen of Scots.
