Bakst, Leon 1866-1924
Russian painter

Born in St Petersburg, he painted religious and genre works in Moscow, then turned to scenery design at Hermitage Court Theatre in St Petersburg. In 1908 he went to Paris, where he was associated with Sergei Diaghilev from the beginnings of the Russian ballet, designing the décor and costumes for numerous productions (1909-21). His rich, exuberant colours, seemingly uncontrolled, in reality produced a powerful theatrical effect which revolutionized fashion and decoration generally.
