Beauregard, Pierre Gustave Toutant 1818-93
US general

He graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point (1838), served in the Mexican War (1846-48), and was appointed by the Confederate government to the command at Charleston, where he commenced the war by the bombardment of Fort Sumter (12 April 1861). He fought at Bull Run (1861), then took command at Shiloh (1862), and later defended Charleston and Richmond.
