Belleau, Rémy 1528-77
French poet

Born in Nogent le Rotrou, he was a member of the Pléiade and published in 1556 a translation of Anacreon that was at first believed to be an original imitation. Bergerie (1565, 'Pastoral', 2nd edn 1572) is a medley of delicately descriptive prose and verse, of which Avril ('April') still appears in anthologies. Amours (1576, 'Love Poems') is a collection of poems concerned with the appearance and arcane powers of precious stones.
