Benes, Eduard 1884-1948
Czechoslovak statesman

Born in Kozlany, a farmer's son, he studied law and became Professor of Sociology at Prague. As an émigré during World War I he worked in Paris with Tomás Masaryk for Czech independence, becoming Foreign Minister of the new state (1918-35), and for a while premier (1921-22). In 1935 he succeeded Masaryk as President, but resigned in 1938 following the Munich Agreement. He then left the country, setting up a government in exile, first in France, then in Great Britain. Returning to Czechoslovakia in 1945, he was re-elected President the following year, but resigned after the Communist takeover in 1948.
