Bennett, James Gordon 1795-1872
US journalist

Born in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland, he emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1819, and became a journalist for the New York Enquirer (1826-28) and the Morning Courier and New York Enquirer (1829-32). In 1835 he started the New York Herald, which he edited until 1867, pioneering many journalistic innovations, such as the use of European correspondents. He was the father of James Gordon Bennett.
