Boito, Arrigo 1842-1918
Italian composer and poet

Born in Padua, he studied at the Milan Conservatorio. His first important work was the opera Mefistofele (1868), which survived its initial failure and later grew in popularity. Thereafter he concentrated mainly on writing libretti, the best-known of which are those for Verdi's Otello (1884-86) and Falstaff (1889-92). Another opera, Nerone, written in 1916, was not produced till 1924.
