Bonnat, Léon Joseph Florentin 1833-1922
French painter

Born in Bayonne, he was well known as a painter of religious subjects, and as a portraitist of notable contemporaries, eg Madame Pasca (1874, Musée d'Orsay, Paris). He taught Toulouse-Lautrec and Georges Braque. He used his earnings from painting to collect old masters, which he donated to form the nucleus of the Musée Bonnat at Bayonne, while his studio and personal effects are in the Musée Basque, Bayonne.
