The reputation he gained at Oxford recommended him to Thomas Wolsey, who made him his chaplain. After Wolsey's fall, he continued in King Henry VIII's service, and in 1540 was made Bishop of London. Imprisoned, however, from 1549 to 1553 for refusing to recognize royal supremacy during the minority of Edward VI, he was restored to office later, under Mary I, and pronounced sentence on several Protestant martyrs. On Elizabeth I's accession (1558), he went with his episcopal colleagues to pay homage at Highgate, but was excepted from the honour of kissing her hand. In May 1559 he refused the Oath of Supremacy, so was deposed and imprisoned in the Marshalsea, where he died.
