Bonpland, Aimé Jacques Alexandre 1773-1858
French botanist

Born in La Rochelle, he travelled with Baron von Humboldt in South America (1799-1804), and collected and described (but did not publish) 6,000 new species of plants. Named Professor of Natural History at Buenos Aires University in 1816, he undertook a journey up the Parana, but José Francia, dictator of Paraguay, arrested him, and kept him prisoner for nine years.
