Bouguereau, William Adolphe 1825-1905
French painter

Born in La Rochelle, he studied art while engaged in business at Bordeaux and in 1850 won the Prix de Rome. He returned from Italy in 1855 and became very successful in France, characteristically depicting mildly erotic historical and mythological scenes. His works include The Body of St Cecilia borne to the Catacombs (1854) and Mater Affictorum (1876).
