Bramante, Donato or Donino, originally Donato di Pasuccio d'Antonio or Donato d'Agnolo or D'Angelo 1444-1514
Italian High Renaissance architect

Born near Urbino, he started as a painter, and from 1477 to 1499 worked in Milan, where he executed his first building projects, such as S Maria delle Grazie (1488-99). He spent the last 15 years of his life, from 1499, in Rome, where he was employed by popes Alexander VI and Julius II and where his most important work was done. He designed the new Basilica of St Peter's (begun in 1506), the Belvedere courtyard, the Tempietto di S Pietro in Montorio (1502), the Palazzo dei Tribunali (1508) and the Palazzo Caprini (c.1510).
