Brentano, Lujo (Ludwig Josef) 1844-1931
German political economist and Nobel Prize winner

He was born in Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, the brother of Franz Brentano. In 1868 he went to England to study the condition of the working classes, and especially trade associations and unions. The outcome of this was his English Guilds (1870) and Die Arbeitergilden der Gegenwart (2 vols, 1871-72, 'Workers' Guilds of the Present'). He became Professor of Economics in five universities and wrote on wages, labour in relation to land, compulsory insurance for workmen, and an Economic History of England (1929). A prominent pacifist, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1927. He was the nephew of Clemens von Brentano.
