Burbage, Richard c.1567-1619
English actor

He was the son of the actor James Burbage, who built the Shoreditch and Blackfriars theatres in London. Richard made his debut early, and had earned a considerable reputation as an actor, when the death of his father (1597) brought him a share in the Blackfriars Theatre. With his brother Cuthbert, he pulled down the Shoreditch house, and built the famous Globe Theatre as a summer playhouse (1599), taking as partners Shakespeare, Heminge, Condell, and others. He was widely admired by hiscontemporaries.
