Burnand, Sir Francis Cowley 1836-1917
English dramatist and journalist

He was called to the Bar in 1862, but the success of some early dramatic ventures altered his plans. He helped to start Fun, but in 1863 left that paper for Punch, of which he became editor (1880-1906). He wrote many burlesques, including Black-Eyed Susan (1866) and Cox and Box, which had music by Arthur Sullivan (1867).
