Busby, Richard 1606-95
English schoolmaster

Born in Lutton-Bowine, Lincolnshire, and educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, he was headmaster of Westminster from 1640 until his death. He was the prototype 17th-century headmaster, notable alike for learning, assiduity, and unsparing application of the birch. Among his pupils were Dryden, John Locke, Robert South, and Francis Atterbury.
