Campbell, Mrs Patrick, née Beatrice Stella Tanner 1865-1940
English actress

She was born in Kensington, London, of mixed English and Italian parentage. She married in 1884, and went on the stage in 1888. Though her mercurial temperament made her the terror of managers, she possessed outstanding charm and talent, and leapt to fame in The Second Mrs Tanqueray (1893). Her first husband died in South Africa in 1900 and she married George Cornwallis-West in 1914. She played Eliza in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion (1914) and formed a long friendship with the author.
