Campbell-Bannerman, Sir Henry 1836-1908
Scottish Liberal statesman

Born in Glasgow, he was the second son of Sir James Campbell, Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1840 to 1843. Educated at Glasgow and Trinity College, Cambridge, he became Liberal MP for Stirling in 1868 and assumed the name Bannerman in 1872. He was Chief Secretary for Ireland (1884), Secretary for War (1886, 1892-95), Liberal leader (1899), and Prime Minister (1905-08). A 'pro-Boer', he granted the ex-republics responsible government out of which grew the Union of South Africa. He launched the campaign against the House of Lords to reduce its power, which culminated in the passing of the momentous Parliament Act of 1911 after the Lords had blocked David Lloyd George's 'Peoples Budget'. He resigned on 4 April 1908, and died 11 April.
