Carmen Sylva 1843-1916
Pen name of Elizabeth, Queen of Romania
The daughter of Prince Hermann of Wied Neuwied, she married King (then Prince) Carol I of Romania in 1869. Her only child, a daughter, died in 1874, and in her grief she turned to writing. Two poems, printed privately at Leipzig (1880) under the name Carmen Sylva, were followed by Stürme (1881), Leidens Erdengang (1882, Eng trans Pilgrim Sorrow by H Zimmern, 1884), and other works. In the war of 1877-78 she endeared herself to her people by her devotion to the wounded.
