Caroline of Brunswick, Amelia Elizabeth 1768-1821
Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and wife of George IV

Born in Brunswick, she was the daughter of George III's sister Augusta. She was married (1795) to the Prince of Wales (later George IV), her first cousin, and although she bore him a daughter, Princess Charlotte, he made her live by herself at Shooters Hill and Blackheath, and from 1814 she lived chiefly in Italy. When George came to the throne (1820), she refused an annuity of Ł50,000 to renounce the title of queen and live abroad. The government instituted proceedings against her for adultery, but they were dropped, largely due to public sympathy and the impressive defence of Lord Brougham. She was nevertheless turned away from Westminster Abbey at George IV's coronation a few days before she died.
