Cavaignac, Louis Eugčne 1802-57
French soldier and politician

Born in Paris, he was the son of General Jean Baptiste Cavaignac (1762-1829), a member of the National Convention. Exiled to Algeria as a republican (1832), he became governor-general there in 1848, but was soon recalled to Paris and became Minister of War. As military dictator he quelled the formidable insurrection of June 1848. In the coup d'état of December 1851 he was arrested but soon released.
