Cecchetti, Enrico 1850-1928
Italian dancer, teacher and choreographer

Born in Milan, he is most closely associated with Russia, where he worked from 1887 to 1902. After performing in Italy, London and the USA he settled in Russia, first as dancer with the Imperial Ballet in St Petersburg and then as teacher, developing the talents of stars like Anna Pavlova. He was Ballet Master of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes for 15 years. Though he choreographed several works, he is remembered for the influential ballet technique he developed, which is still highly regarded today.
