Chalmers, Thomas 1780-1847
Scottish theologian and reformer
Born in Anstruther, Fife, he was educated at St Andrews. Ordained in 1803, he became a minister in Glasgow (1815), where his impressive oratory was quickly noticed. He became Professor of Moral Philosophy at St Andrews (1823), and of Theology at Edinburgh (1827). In 1843 he led the Disruption, when 470 ministers seceded from the Established Church of Scotland to found the Free Church of Scotland. He was the first moderator of its assembly, and Principal of the Free Church College from 1843 to 1847, when he completed his Institutes of Theology. His works, in 34 volumes, deal especially with natural theology, apologetics and social economy.

Search Tip
